"A Thirst for Freedom"
By
C. G. Gardiner
Gardiner's new play tells the story of what life was like for Black Americans from the end of slavery as an American institution to the beginning of the great migration out of the South.
The play depicts controversial themes;
post-civil war and Jim Crow laws were harsh times for Black people. Parental discretion is advised.

It’s Mardi Gras! Fat Tuesday, last day of Carnival season, an opportunity to recognize the achievements of African-Americans. Charles Joseph "Buddy" Bolden (9/6/1877 - 11/4/1931), an African-American cornetist, admired by his contemporaries as a key figure in the development of a New Orleans style of ragtime music, or "jass," which later came to be known as jazz; and we honor his contribution to America’s original musical genre.
MISSION
Live Garra Theatre endeavors to employ the cultural arts to address universal social-life issues; illuminate all facets of a multicultural society; foster cross-cultural understanding of the many voices in the community; reinforce the value of diversity, and strengthen the social connections among people. The word "garra" literally means claws -- to hold on and to ‘live Garra’ (Portuguese for prevail) means to go the distance and never give up.
As a resident company of the Theatre Consortium of Silver Spring, the organization operates out of the Silver Spring Black Box Theatre as a performance training studio, an incubator for a core repertory of skilled poets, playwrights, and artists, as well as providing a 'safe harbor' for the youth. Live Garra Theatre aspires to fill the void of culturally specific Theatre, preserving the unique legacy of the African-American heritage and contributing to the survival of Black Theatre.
